{"id":322049,"date":"2026-01-14T09:47:55","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T01:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=322049"},"modified":"2026-01-14T09:47:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T01:47:55","slug":"freezing-rain-paralyses-transport-in-central-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=322049","title":{"rendered":"Freezing rain paralyses transport in Central Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2026\/01\/13\/image-350820-1768307035.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"263\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>VIENNA, Jan 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Freezing rain led to flights being suspended\u00a0at Vienna airport, while neighbouring Slovakia, Czech Republic and\u00a0Hungary also experienced travel disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snow and freezing temperatures buffeted Europe last week, with gale-force\u00a0winds and storms claiming some 15 lives, causing travel mayhem, shutting\u00a0schools, and cutting power to hundreds of thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A thick layer of ice on the Vienna airport runways led to arriving flights\u00a0being diverted to other airports, while all departing flights were put on\u00a0hold early Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Austria&#8217;s state railway company OeBB also asked travellers to postpone non-urgent journeys, with numerous train connections facing interruptions and\u00a0cancellations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In neighbouring Slovakia, the Bratislava airport was also closed early\u00a0Tuesday due to bad weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slovak police on Facebook urged people to avoid travel because of &#8220;extreme&#8221;\u00a0ice and snow in the west of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Czech Republic, ice was also hampering road and rail traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prague airport came to a virtual standstill, with firefighters having to de-ice the runways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 50 people were treated for injuries because of the icy conditions,\u00a0according to Prague&#8217;s emergency services, cited by the CTK agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Hungary, meteorological services also issued alerts for freezing rain and\u00a0snowfall as severe winter conditions affect a large part of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trains and flights were experiencing delays, while authorities reported drift\u00a0ice on the Danube and the Tisza rivers, where icebreakers have been put on\u00a0alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lake Balaton in the west of the country is currently frozen &#8212; a relatively\u00a0rare phenomenon seen about once every ten to fifteen years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, authorities warned that the ice is still too thin for skating,\u00a0urging the public to be cautious. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VIENNA, Jan 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Freezing rain led to flights being suspended\u00a0at Vienna airport, while neighbouring Slovakia, Czech Republic and\u00a0Hungary also experienced travel disruptions.
