{"id":321923,"date":"2026-01-12T10:26:37","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T02:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=321923"},"modified":"2026-01-12T10:26:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T02:26:37","slug":"sudan-pm-kamil-idris-announces-govt-return-to-khartoum-from-wartime-capital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=321923","title":{"rendered":"Sudan: PM Kamil Idris announces govt return to Khartoum from wartime capital"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2026\/01\/11\/image-350154-1768134570.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"343\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>KHARTOUM, Jan 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Sudan&#8217;s Prime Minister Kamil Idris\u00a0announced the government&#8217;s return to Khartoum, after nearly three\u00a0years of operating from its wartime capital of Port Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early days of the regular military&#8217;s war with the paramilitary Rapid\u00a0Support Forces in April 2023, the army-aligned government fled the capital,\u00a0which was quickly overrun by rival troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has pursued a gradual return to Khartoum since the army recaptured the\u00a0city last March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today, we return, and the Government of Hope returns to the national\u00a0capital,&#8221; Idris told reporters in Khartoum, promising &#8220;better services&#8221; for\u00a0residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For close to two years, the Sudanese capital &#8212; composed of the three cities\u00a0of Khartoum, Omdurman and Khartoum North (Bahri) &#8212; was an active\u00a0battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entire neighbourhoods were besieged, rival fighters shot artillery across the\u00a0Nile River and millions of people were displaced from the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between March and October, 1.2 million people returned to Khartoum, according\u00a0to the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many found a city with barely functioning services, their homes destroyed and\u00a0neighbourhoods pockmarked by makeshift cemeteries authorities are now\u00a0exhuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The war is estimated to have killed tens of thousands of people in the\u00a0capital alone, but the complete toll is unknown, as many families are forced\u00a0to bury their dead in makeshift graves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Idris said the government was committed to improving electricity, water,\u00a0healthcare and education services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the UN, the rehabilitation of the capital&#8217;s essential\u00a0infrastructure would cost some $350 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent months, the government has held some cabinet meetings in Khartoum\u00a0and launched reconstruction efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city has witnessed relative calm, though the RSF has carried out drone\u00a0strikes, particularly on infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Battles rage elsewhere across the vast country.
