WASHINGTON, July 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — US President Donald Trump said migrant detention centers that have come under criticism for
overcrowding and poor conditions will be opened to visits by journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to start showing some of these detention centers to the press.
I want the press to go in and see them,\u201d Trump told reporters in Morristown, New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to have some of the press go in because they\u2019re crowded, and
we\u2019re the ones who were complaining about their crowding,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His comments came after The New York Times and The El Paso Times on
Saturday published an article describing a Border Patrol station in Clint,
Texas as filled with hundreds of children wearing filthy clothing and packed into disease-ridden cells \u2014 a story Trump called a \u201choax.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe stench of the children\u2019s dirty clothing was so strong it spread to
the agents\u2019 own clothing \u2014 people in town would scrunch their noses when
they left work. The children cried constantly,\u201d the article said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The article echoed a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) watchdog report released last week warning of \u201cdangerous overcrowding\u201d in multiple detention facilities, which hold thousands of migrants seeking to remain in the United States, most of whom are fleeing violence and poverty in their Central American homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Democratic lawmakers who also visited detention facilities reported
massive crowding in cells with no running water, where children and adults lacked access to needed medicines and were deprived of showers for up to two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump had previously expressed little sympathy for migrants in the
facilities, saying on Twitter \u201cIf Illegal Immigrants are unhappy with the
conditions in the quickly built or refitted detentions centers, just tell
them not to come. All problems solved!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador agreed last month to crack down on undocumented migration, deploying tens of thousands of National Guardsmen to tighten its borders after Trump threatened to impose tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mexico\u2019s national immigration authority said last week deportations had
jumped by 33 percent in June, while the DHS said it expects a 25 percent drop in migrants taken into custody along the US-Mexico border in the same month. — NNN-AGENCIES
