{"id":312685,"date":"2025-09-12T09:47:29","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T01:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=312685"},"modified":"2025-09-12T09:47:31","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T01:47:31","slug":"dozens-of-news-organisations-urge-us-not-to-slash-journalist-visas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=312685","title":{"rendered":"Dozens of news organisations urge US not to slash journalist visas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2025\/09\/11\/image-310784-1757592349.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"322\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>PARIS, Sept 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; More than 100 international media groups\u00a0and industry bodies urged Washington on Thursday not to slash the time\u00a0foreign journalists can stay in the United States, saying the planned change\u00a0would hurt its image abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Donald Trump&#8217;s plan would &#8220;reduce the quantity and quality of\u00a0coverage coming from the US&#8221; and &#8220;damage, not enhance, America&#8217;s global\u00a0standing&#8221;, AFP news agency and 117 other signatories to a joint statement\u00a0wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Backers of the appeal ranged from international news agencies like AFP and\u00a0Reuters, to public broadcasters including Britain&#8217;s BBC, Germany&#8217;s ARD and\u00a0Australia&#8217;s ABC, national newspapers like Canada&#8217;s Globe and Mail or the\u00a0Irish Times and press freedom groups including Reporters Without Borders and\u00a0the Committee to Protect Journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration last month trailed plans to slash journalists&#8217; stays\u00a0to a renewable 240-day period &#8212; or just 90 days for Chinese media workers &#8212;\u00a0alongside a four-year limit on student visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current rules allow journalists to stay in the US for up to five years,\u00a0meaning they &#8220;gain the deep knowledge, trusted networks and contextual\u00a0immersion needed to explain America to global audiences&#8221;, the signatories\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This serves a critical US interest: ensuring that America&#8217;s policies,\u00a0culture, and leadership are clearly and accurately communicated to\u00a0international audiences in their own languages,&#8221; they added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visa proposals are part of a wider crackdown on foreigners in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested hundreds\u00a0of South Korean workers who were helping set up a Hyundai factory in Georgia,\u00a0shocking the US ally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slashing the length of journalists&#8217; stays &#8220;risks leaving the world less\u00a0informed about American news and current affairs&#8221;, the news organisations\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Rival nations and powerful adversaries will waste no time in filling the\u00a0resulting vacuum with narratives about the US that serve their own interests\u00a0before the truth,&#8221; they added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump popularised the term &#8220;fake news&#8221; from around the time of his 2017\u00a0inauguration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And just last month the White House lashed out at what it called a &#8220;foreign\u00a0influence operation&#8221; by German-owned outlet Politico, which published an\u00a0article criticising Trump&#8217;s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS, Sept 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; More than 100 international media groups\u00a0and industry bodies urged Washington on Thursday not to slash the time\u00a0foreign journalists can stay in the United States, saying the planned change\u00a0would hurt its image abroad.
