{"id":309353,"date":"2025-08-10T10:29:53","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T02:29:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=309353"},"modified":"2025-08-10T10:29:53","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T02:29:53","slug":"uk-london-police-arrest-466-people-for-backing-banned-palestine-action-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=309353","title":{"rendered":"UK: London police arrest 466 people for backing banned Palestine Action group"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/2025-08-09t122258z-415833768-rc2o3galmy01-rtrmadp-3-israel-palestinians-britain-palestine-action-protest.jpg?c=original&amp;q=w_780,c_fill\" alt=\"People attend a rally challenging the British government's proscription of the activist group Palestine Action in London on Saturday,\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LONDON, Aug 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Police have arrested 466 people in central London on Saturday for protesting the British government\u2019s decision to ban the pro-Palestinian activist group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/30\/uk\/palestine-action-uk-legal-challenge-intl\">Palestine Action<\/a>\u00a0under anti-terrorism laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs of 9pm, 466 people had been arrested for showing support for Palestine Action,\u201d the Metropolitan Police wrote on X on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight arrests were made for other offences, including five for assaults on officers, but police said none were seriously injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Palestine Action is a UK-based group which says it aims to disrupt the operations of weapons manufacturers supplying the Israeli government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, UK lawmakers voted to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/02\/uk\/uk-palestine-action-house-of-commons-latam-intl\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proscribe the group<\/a>&nbsp;after two Palestine Action activists broke into Britain\u2019s largest air base in central England in June, damaging two military aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s ban makes it illegal under UK law to be a member of \u2013 or invite support for \u2013 Palestine Action and puts them on par with terrorist organizations such as Hamas, al Qaeda and ISIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large crowds turned up for demonstrations organized by Defend Our Juries on Saturday afternoon at London\u2019s Parliament Square. London\u2019s Metropolitan Police had cautioned that it would arrest anyone showing support for the proscribed group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The demonstration organizers said on social media that upwards of one thousand people attended the protest, \u201cholding up signs that read \u2018I oppose Genocide, I support Palestine Action\u2019\u201d in a mass display of defiance against (British Home Secretary) Yvette Cooper\u2019s ban.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Metropolitan Police stated that approximately 500 to 600 people were in attendance when the demonstration began. \u201cMany were onlookers, media, or people not holding placards supporting Palestine Action,\u201d police said in an earlier statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those arrested at the protest were taken to \u201cprisoner processing points in the Westminster area, and those whose details could be confirmed were bailed, with conditions not to attend any further protest in support of Palestine Action,\u201d police also said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper thanked police for \u201cdealing with the very small number of people whose actions crossed the line into criminality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe right to protest is one we protect fiercely but this is very different from displaying support for this one specific and narrow, proscribed organisation,\u201d she said, according to the UK\u2019s Press Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International UK condemned the arrest of peaceful protesters as \u201ca violation of the UK\u2019s international obligations to protect the rights of freedom of expression and assembly,\u201d in a post on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Palestine Action\u2019s co-founder Huda Ammori\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2025%2F07%2F30%2Fuk%2Fpalestine-action-uk-legal-challenge-intl&amp;data=05%7C02%7CCaitlin.Danaher%40wbdcontractor.com%7Cf54470c534e545c7345008ddd772cef3%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638903610352243489%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=lW698XNXsIBEP56D0ARqb3QVPJ6RMcWTImgMvJyC%2B18%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\">won a bid to challenge the ban<\/a>, with a London High Court judge granting permission to seek a judicial review. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON, Aug 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Police have arrested 466 people in central London on Saturday for protesting the British government\u2019s decision to ban the pro-Palestinian activist group\u00a0Palestine Action\u00a0under anti-terrorism laws. \u201cAs of 9pm, 466 people had been arrested for showing support for Palestine Action,\u201d the Metropolitan Police wrote on X on Saturday.
