{"id":308883,"date":"2025-08-05T11:36:19","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T03:36:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=308883"},"modified":"2025-08-05T11:36:19","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T03:36:19","slug":"unicef-warns-of-spread-of-cholera-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=308883","title":{"rendered":"UNICEF warns of spread of cholera in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.plenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/colera-1-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-263425\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>UNITED NATIONS, Aug 5 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) &#8212; More than 640,000 children are currently at risk from the spread of cholera in North Darfur, Sudan, the United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund (UNICEF) warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the agency, the disease threatens children already weakened by hunger and displacement, while aid convoys struggle to reach isolated communities amid an intensifying conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1,180 cases of cholera\u2014including some 300 children\u2014and at least 20 deaths have been recorded in Tawila, a city that has welcomed more than half a million people fleeing violence since April, UNICEF said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the Darfur region, the figures are even more alarming: nearly 2,140 cases and at least 80 deaths as of July 30, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNICEF Representative in Sudan, Sheldon Yett, lamented that, despite being preventable, cholera is spreading in this way and endangering the lives of the youngest and most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given this scenario, the organization called for urgently ensuring sustained, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the outbreak was officially declared in August 2024, more than 94,000 cases of cholera and more than 2,370 deaths have been reported in 17 of the 18 Sudanese states. &#8212; NNN-PRENSA LATINA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNITED NATIONS, Aug 5 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) &#8212; More than 640,000 children are currently at risk from the spread of cholera in North Darfur, Sudan, the United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund (UNICEF) warned.
