{"id":30543,"date":"2019-06-29T12:08:27","date_gmt":"2019-06-29T04:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=30543"},"modified":"2019-06-29T12:08:30","modified_gmt":"2019-06-29T04:08:30","slug":"malaysian-firms-can-participate-in-singapores-digital-banking-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=30543","title":{"rendered":"Malaysian firms can participate in Singapore&#8217;s digital banking drive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5>By Massita Ahmad<br><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>SINGAPORE, June 29 (NNN-BERNAMA) \u2013 Foreign companies, including those from\u00a0Malaysia,\u00a0are eligible\u00a0to\u00a0participate in the further liberalised Singapore banking industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The republic will issue up to five new digital bank licences, a move which extends digital bank licences to non-bank players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said it expects to invite\u00a0applications in August\u00a0and will provide more details\u00a0on the eligibility and admission criteria at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The five new digital bank licences will comprise up to two digital full bank licences, which allow licensees to provide a wide range of financial services and take deposits from retail customers,&nbsp;and up to three digital wholesale bank licences, which allow licensees to serve small and medium enterprises&nbsp;and other non-retail segments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Application for digital full bank licences is open to companies headquartered in Singapore and controlled by Singaporeans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MAS said foreign companies are eligible for these full bank licences if they form a joint venture with a Singapore company&nbsp;and the joint venture meets the headquarters and control requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Application for digital wholesale bank licences, however, is open to all companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new digital bank licences mark the next chapter in Singapore\u2019s banking liberalisation journey,\u201d said Senior Minister and Chairman of MAS, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, in announcing the measures at the 46th&nbsp;annual dinner of the Association of Banks in Singapore on&nbsp;Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey will ensure that Singapore\u2019s banking sector continues to be resilient, competitive and vibrant,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to MAS, the entry of new digital players will add diversity and strengthen Singapore\u2019s banking system in the digital economy of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With innovative business models and strong digital capabilities, these players can cater to under-served segments of the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will provide impetus for existing banks to continue enhancing the quality of their digital offerings, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MAS noted that Singapore banking groups may also establish digital banks under the existing Internet banking framework introduced in 2000 rather than&nbsp;applying for the new licences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; NNN-BERNAMA <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Massita Ahmad SINGAPORE, June 29 (NNN-BERNAMA) \u2013 Foreign companies, including those from\u00a0Malaysia,\u00a0are eligible\u00a0to\u00a0participate in the further liberalised Singapore banking industry.
