State officials have said the child attends day care and lives in Alameda County, which includes Oakland and surrounding communities, but released no other details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The infection brings the reported number of US bird flu cases this year to 55, including 29 in California, the CDC said.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bird-flu-dairy-workers-h5n1-20d6a20ea9e1047ad7a92f9da31709f8\">Most were farmworkers<\/a>\u00a0who tested positive with mild symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One exception was an adult in Missouri who did not work at a farm and had no known contact with an infected animal. It remains a mystery how that person was infected \u2014 health officials\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bird-flu-dairy-cows-chickens-missouri-57c3effbb8d0431321368d086fe1cba5\">have said<\/a>\u00a0there was no evidence of it spreading between people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A British Columbia teen also was recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bird-flu-canada-h5n1-d5cac97a9d7e90c227a600364573a8a3\">hospitalized with bird flu<\/a>, Canadian officials have said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>H5N1 bird flu has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bird-flu-humans-animals-deaths-ae01d3717783f0cf41e23f3fedb97017\">spreading widely<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. among wild birds, poultry and a number of other animals over the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It began spreading in U.S. dairy cattle in March. California has become the center of that outbreak, with 402 infected herds detected there since August. That\u2019s 65% of the 616 herds confirmed with the virus in 15 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials said they were investigating how the child was infected. California health officials previously said in a statement that they were looking into a \u201cpossible exposure to wild birds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no evidence bird flu spread from the child to other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People in the child\u2019s household reported having similar symptoms, but their test results were negative for bird flu.
