{"id":28175,"date":"2019-06-11T10:46:36","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T02:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=28175"},"modified":"2019-06-11T10:46:38","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T02:46:38","slug":"canada-to-ban-single-use-plastics-from-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=28175","title":{"rendered":"Canada to ban single-use plastics from 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Canada-to-ban-single-use-plastics-from-2021.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Canada-to-ban-single-use-plastics-from-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MONTREAL, June 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Canada will ban single-use plastics from 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced, declaring it a \u201cglobal challenge\u201d to phase out the plastic bags, straws and cutlery clogging the world\u2019s oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am very pleased to announce that as early as 2021, Canada will ban harmful, single-use plastics from coast to coast,\u201d Trudeau said, arguing Canada has a unique chance to lead the fight against plastic pollution as the country with the world\u2019s longest coastlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less than 10 percent of plastics used in Canada are currently recycled, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, a million birds and more than 100,000 marine mammals worldwide are injured or killed by becoming entangled in plastic or ingesting it through the food chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Single-use items represent about 70 percent of the plastic waste littering the marine environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Straws, plastic bags, cutlery, plates and stir sticks would be among the items banned, a government statement said.
