{"id":281613,"date":"2024-11-02T11:47:22","date_gmt":"2024-11-02T03:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=281613"},"modified":"2024-11-02T11:47:23","modified_gmt":"2024-11-02T03:47:23","slug":"south-africa-president-ramaphosa-appoints-members-of-special-tribunal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=281613","title":{"rendered":"South Africa: President Ramaphosa appoints members of Special Tribunal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sanews.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/2012\/images\/news_story_template\/202411\/gaveljustices.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"322\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>PRETORIA, Nov 23 (NNN-SANEWS) &#8212; South Africa&#8217;s President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed the Tribunal President and Judges of the Special Tribunal, which has a statutory mandate to recover public funds syphoned from the fiscus through corruption, fraud and illicit money flows.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>In a statement, The Presidency said Ramaphosa had made these appointments in terms of the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunal Act of 1996 and following consultation with Chief Justice Mandisa Maya.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>The President has appointed Judge Margaret Victor as Tribunal President, with effect from Friday, Nov 1, for a period of three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President has also appointed the following additional judges for a period of three years:\u00a0Judge Thandi Victoria Norman, of the Eastern Cape Divisron of the High Court; Judge David Makhoba, of the Gauteng Division of the High Court; Judge Brian A Mashile, of the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court; Judge Andre Henry Petersen, of the North West Division of the High Court; and Judge Chantel Moira Jennifer Fortuin, of the Western Cape Division of the High Court<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Presidency said the Special Tribunals differ from ordinary civil proceedings which are adversarial in nature.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Special Tribunal adopts a more flexible and expeditious approach to legal actions.
