{"id":28053,"date":"2019-06-10T14:27:29","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T06:27:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=28053"},"modified":"2019-06-10T14:27:30","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T06:27:30","slug":"six-presidential-candidates-vie-in-historic-mauritania-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=28053","title":{"rendered":"Six presidential candidates vie in historic Mauritania elections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3>NOUAKCHOTT, June 10 (NNN-AFRICANEWS) &#8212; Six candidates have declared their interest to run for the Presidential seat in Mauritania after official campaigns for the June 22 elections were opened.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The candidates are hoping to replace President Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz after his second term tenure ends, in what is expected to be a historical democratic handover of power following the country\u2019s many coups between 1978 to 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The candidates include the ruling party\u2019s Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, the former Minister of Defense, the main oppositions\u2019s party coalition candidate Sidi Mohamed Ould Boubacar among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opposition has expressed concerns in the elections pointing at the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), whose members are too close to the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outgoing president, a former general who came to power in a coup in 2008, elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2014 called on the 4.5 million citizens to approach these elections in a spirit of responsible competition and in a climate of tolerance and solidarity. &#8212; NNN-Africanews<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOUAKCHOTT, June 10 (NNN-AFRICANEWS) &#8212; Six candidates have declared their interest to run for the Presidential seat in Mauritania after official campaigns for the June 22 elections were opened.
