{"id":28045,"date":"2019-06-10T14:14:47","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T06:14:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=28045"},"modified":"2019-06-10T14:14:49","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T06:14:49","slug":"moldova-crisis-snap-elections-called-by-interim-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=28045","title":{"rendered":"Moldova crisis: Snap elections called by interim president"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.brudirect.com\/images\/news\/20190610_europe.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Protests have been staged in front of Moldova&#8217;s parliament in recent days<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0CHISINAU, June 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; <\/strong>Moldova&#8217;s pro-Russian President Igor Dodon has been stripped of his duties, escalating a political crisis stemming from inconclusive general elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move came after his party agreed a coalition cabinet with a pro-European Union block, welcomed by the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outgoing PM Pavel Filip&#8217;s party challenged the deal and the Constitutional Court intervened to appoint him as interim president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Filip then announced the dissolution of parliament and new elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parliament, however, has refused to accept his order, saying the country&#8217;s state institutions had been seized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are now fears that the prolonged political crisis could lead to violent clashes on the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moldova, a former Soviet republic, lies between the EU member state Romania and Ukraine and is one of Europe&#8217;s poorest countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elections in Moldova in February resulted in stalemate, with no clear winner emerging between rival pro-EU and pro-Russian parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday, the Constitutional Court in the capital Chisinau relieved Dodon of his duties because of his refusal to dissolve parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This came a day after the pro-EU Acum political bloc and Dodon&#8217;s Socialists struck an unlikely deal and formed a compromise government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In parliament, lawmakers also declared that Moldova&#8217;s state and legal institutions &#8220;have been seized&#8221; by influential oligarchs, calling for the resignation of several top officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But their opponents say the formation of the new government took place a day after a constitutional deadline for this expired &#8211; a claim both Acum and the Socialists dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Filip&#8217;s Democratic Party &#8211; which is led by Moldova&#8217;s richest man Vladimir Plahotniuc &#8211; later filed a legal challenge which was backed by the Constitutional Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, Dodon described this as desperate steps to usurp power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the European Union has expressed support for the new coalition government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The European Union stands ready to work with the democratically legitimate government,&#8221; a statement issued on Sunday said. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Protests have been staged in front of Moldova&#8217;s parliament in recent days \u00a0CHISINAU, June 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Moldova&#8217;s pro-Russian President Igor Dodon has been stripped of his duties, escalating a political crisis stemming from inconclusive general elections.
