{"id":27080,"date":"2019-06-01T11:43:22","date_gmt":"2019-06-01T03:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=27080"},"modified":"2019-06-01T11:43:24","modified_gmt":"2019-06-01T03:43:24","slug":"ethiopia-pm-abiy-plans-to-return-displaced-people-after-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=27080","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopia: PM Abiy plans to return displaced people after violence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3>ADDIS ABABA, June 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Ethiopia\u2019s Prime Minister pursued a plan to return displaced people to their homes following ethnic violence, but relief workers voiced fears that the initiative could provoke fresh violence.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Abiy Ahmed, who took office in April 2018, has won international plaudits for announcing bold reform pledges, but the blossoming of political freedoms over the past year has been accompanied by a surge in ethnic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivalries between ethnic groups \u2014 once repressed by a state with an iron fist \u2014 have exploded into the open, and the United Nations says 2.4 million Ethiopians are currently displaced due to these conflicts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More people were displaced last year in the Horn of Africa nation than in any other country, according to data published this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month the government announced it was scaling up its plan to return displaced people to their homes as soon as possible, a message Abiy reinforced on Thursday when his office published photos of him speaking with people from the Gedeo and West Guji areas in southern Ethiopia who had recently returned to their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area was the site of brutal violence last year. About 700,000 people fled ethnic violence in the area last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abiy\u2019s delegation, which included Minister of Peace Muferiat Kamil, provided the communities with building materials to rebuild their homes \u2014 razed last year during the violence \u2014 and the prime minister planted seedlings, according to a statement from his office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upbeat message contrasts with the views of aid groups and experts who say many of the displaced people are terrified by the prospect of returning to their homelands now, before the causes of the violence along ethnic lines have been resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPushing people to return to their home communities prematurely will only add to the ongoing suffering,\u201d Refugees International said in a statement in response to what it called the government\u2019s \u201cforced returns\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a risk of further violence that stems from the very ambitious return targets,\u201d said William Davison, senior Ethiopia analyst at the International Crisis Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe problem is there may be lingering resentment and disputes over land and property if adequate work has not been done to assess the situation for returnees and ensure relations have improved,\u201d he said. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ADDIS ABABA, June 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Ethiopia\u2019s Prime Minister pursued a plan to return displaced people to their homes following ethnic violence, but relief workers voiced fears that the initiative could provoke fresh violence.
