SINGAPORE, June 1 (NNN-Bernama) — How the United States and China work out their tensions and frictions will define the international environment for decades to come, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is natural that the two powers will vie for power and influence, but competition should not inevitably lead to conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe hope the US and China find a constructive way forward, competing certainly, but at the same time cooperating on major issues of mutual interest,\u201d he said in his keynote address at the 18th IISS Shangri-La Dialogue here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Malaysia\u2019s Minister of Defence Mohamad Sabu is leading a delegation for the second time to the three-day Asian defence summit which will end Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Lee, some people argue that compromise is not possible or perhaps even desirable, because the US and China hold such different values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indeed, he said, one US official recently defined the clash with China as \u201ca fight with a really different civilisation and a different ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others observe that the US is a young country that wants everyone to be like it, while China is an old country that believes no one else can be like it, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lee noted that to expect every country to adopt the same cultural values and political system is neither reasonable nor realistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn fact, humankind\u2019s diversity is its strength. There is much we can learn from one another, from the differences in our values, perspectives, systems, and policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe story of humankind\u2019s progress has been one of exchange of ideas, and continuous learning and adaptation,\u201d said the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Citing a quote from Henry Kissinger last year, Lee said: \u201cWe are in a very, very grave period for the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo one can predict which way events will develop. At different times in the last two centuries, Southeast Asia has seen rivalry between great powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt has experienced destruction and suffering from war and occupation. It has been divided into opposing camps. It has seen how isolation from the world economy led to stagnation and sometimes conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt other times, it has benefited from international cooperation that created an open, stable environment where countries could prosper in peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On a long view, Lee noted that \u201cwe cannot rule out any of these eventualities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he said \u201cin our own generation, we must work together to maximise the chances that countries will have the wisdom and courage to make the right choices, opt for openness and integration, peace and cooperation, and so preserve and expand the progress which we have made together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, during a question-and-answer session, Lee was asked on Singapore\u2019s take on 5G as Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had made a stand in supporting Huawei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Mahathir had said in Tokyo on Thursday that Malaysia is unperturbed with the allegation of spying levelled against the Chinese tech giant, Huawei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are too small to have an impact on the company like Huawei, whose research is far bigger than the whole of Malaysia\u2019s research capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo we try to make use of their technology as much as possible. Yes, there may be some spying, but what is there to spy in Malaysia\u201d Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying during a dialogue session at the 25th International Conference on The Future of Asia (Nikkei Conference).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responding to the question, Lee said: \u201cSingapore is even smaller than Malaysia. We are in the process of defining and selecting our 5G system and the equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have not yet decided. We have not settled the network configuration or what will be the equipment going to be. Who the suppliers are…we are studying this carefully. We are consulting the industry. We are consulting with friendly regulators and we will make these decision in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
