rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/jrjxqc\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OSLO, May 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8211;The leaders of Norway, Ireland and Spain have said their countries will formally recognise Palestine as a state next week for the sake of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2024\/5\/22\/israels-war-on-gaza-live-famine-fears-rise-as-aid-failure-escalates\">peace in the Middle East<\/a>\u201c, prompting Israel to immediately recall its envoys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norway\u2019s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said on Wednesday that a two-state solution was in Israel\u2019s best interest, adding that the recognition would come as of May 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere cannot be peace in the Middle East if there is no recognition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the midst of a war, with tens of thousands killed and injured [in Gaza], we must keep alive the only alternative that offers a political solution for Israelis and Palestinians alike: Two states, living side by side, in peace and security,\u201d Gahr Store added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecognition of Palestine is a means of supporting the moderate forces which have been losing ground in this protracted and brutal conflict,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis could ultimately make it possible to resume the process towards achieving a two-state solution and give it renewed momentum,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after Norway\u2019s announcement, Ireland\u2019s prime minister Simon Harris said his country would also recognise a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, Ireland, Norway, and Spain are announcing that we recognise the state of Palestine,\u201d Harris said at a news conference in DUBLIN. \u201cEach of us will now undertake whatever national steps are necessary to give effect to that decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m confident that further countries will join us in taking this important step in the coming weeks,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign minister Micheal Martin said on X that the recognition will take place on May 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\"><div Spain\u2019s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday that the country\u2019s council of ministers would also recognise an independent Palestinian state on May 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in the Spanish parliament, Sanchez accused his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu of putting the two-state solution in \u201cdanger\u201d with his policy of \u201cpain and destruction\u201d in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel immediately announced it was recalling its envoys to Ireland and Norway for \u201curgent consultations\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, I am sending a sharp message to Ireland and Norway: Israel will not go over this in silence,\u201d Foreign Minister Israel Katz said in a statement, adding that he planned to do the same with the Spanish ambassador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Israeli foreign ministry had earlier posted a video message addressed to Ireland on X warning that \u201crecognising a Palestinian state risks turning you into a pawn in the hands of Iran and Hamas\u201d, adding the move would \u201conly fuel extremism and instability\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel has said plans for Palestinian recognition constitute a \u201cprize for terrorism\u201d that would reduce the chances of a negotiated resolution to the war in Gaza, which began on October 7 when Palestinian fighters stormed into southern
