CARORA (Venezuela), May 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Venezuela\u2019s opposition leader rejected \u201cfalse dialogue\u201d in resolving the country\u2019s political crisis, as Norway announced it would host another round of talks between opposition representatives and the government of President Nicolas Maduro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two sides would return to Oslo this week \u201cto continue a process facilitated by Norway,\u201d the Scandinavian country\u2019s Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soreid said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mediation bid comes after a months-long power struggle between National Assembly leader Juan Guaido and Maduro, with sometimes deadly street clashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
US-backed Guaido is recognized by dozens of countries as interim president after dismissing Maduro\u2019s presidency as \u201cillegitimate\u201d following his re-election last year in polls widely dismissed as rigged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maduro retains the backing of major creditors Russia, China and Cuba, as well as the powerful military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNobody is ever going to get us here confused about a false dialogue,\u201d Guaido told supporters in Carora, Lara state on Saturday, without addressing Norway\u2019s announcement directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is cautious about the talks since they are unpopular with the opposition base that has spent months in the streets trying to push Maduro out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Guaido said there had been no \u201cnegotiation\u201d in the Norway talks, while any deal should include mediation leading to Maduro\u2019s departure and new elections being scheduled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are going to insist,\u201d he said, \u201cbecause today by combining all our strategies, using all the tools we have, we are going to get to that final step,\u201d Guaido said, referring to street protests and multiple levels of diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Guaido tried to incite a military uprising against Maduro on April 30 but only about 30 members of the armed forces joined him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government has since ramped up pressure on Guaido\u2019s allies and supporters, charging 10 lawmakers with treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pro-government Constituent Assembly recently stripped 14 opposition lawmakers of their legislative immunity over their support for the failed uprising. — NNN-AGENCIES
