{"id":261347,"date":"2024-04-22T09:16:36","date_gmt":"2024-04-22T01:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=261347"},"modified":"2024-04-22T09:16:36","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T01:16:36","slug":"central-african-republic-58-die-after-overloaded-river-boat-capsizes-in-capital-bangui-rescuers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=261347","title":{"rendered":"Central African Republic: 58 die after overloaded river boat capsizes in capital  Bangui &#8211; rescuers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2024\/04\/21\/image-184752-1713667095.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<br>\u00a0BANGUI, April 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; At least 58 people going to a funeral died after their overloaded river boat capsized in the Central African Republic&#8217;s capital Bangui, the head of civil protection said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We were able to extract 58 lifeless bodies,&#8221; Thomas Djimasse told Radio Guira. &#8220;We don&#8217;t know the total number of people who are underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to witnesses and videos on social media, the wooden boat was carrying more than 300 people &#8212; some standing and others perched on wooden structures &#8212; when it sank on the Mpoko river on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vessel was heading to the funeral of a village chief in Makolo, some 45 kilometres from Bangui, but got into difficulty shortly after setting off from the pier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rescue services arrived 40 minutes after the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government sent its condolences to the bereaved families and government spokesman Maxime Balalouhe  announced the opening of an investigation and the setting up of a support system for families of the victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maurice Kapenya, who was following the boat in a canoe because there was no space on board, said his own sister was among the bodies of the victims he had recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was helped by local fisherman and residents.
