{"id":256458,"date":"2024-03-01T11:55:22","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T03:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=256458"},"modified":"2024-03-01T11:55:23","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T03:55:23","slug":"cubas-more-than-400-fuel-price-rise-to-take-effect-friday-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=256458","title":{"rendered":"Cuba&#8217;s more than 400% fuel price rise to take effect Friday: government"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2024\/03\/01\/image-176219-1709262858.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HAVANA, March 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A more than 400-percent fuel price hike will take effect in Cuba this week, a month later than initially planned, the government of the cash-strapped island nation said.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 Finance Minister Vladimir Regueiro announced via government mouthpiece Granma that the higher prices will enter into force on Friday, March 1.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 The price of electricity will rise by 25 percent from the same date for the country&#8217;s biggest consumers, he added.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 Havana had announced the increase in the fuel price from Feb 1 as part of a series of measures seeking to cut the communist-run nation&#8217;s budget deficit.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 But it delayed the hike after a &#8220;cybersecurity incident&#8221; last month.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 A few days later, Economy Minister Alejandro Gil was relieved of his duties.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 The cost of a liter of regular gasoline is to rise from 25 pesos (about 20 US cents) to 132 pesos, while the price of premium gasoline will jump from 30 to 156 pesos, the government said.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 The price for the public transport sector will remain the same, however, and an increase in natural gas prices has been delayed.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 Authorities have also ordered that tourists pay for fuel in foreign currency.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 Cuba has two official exchange rates, one for individuals at 120 pesos to the US dollar and another for business banking transactions at 24 pesos.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 The nation of 11 million people is experiencing its worst economic crisis since the collapse of the Soviet bloc in the 1990s due to the coronavirus pandemic, tightening of US sanctions in recent years, and structural weaknesses in the economy.<br>\u00a0<br>\u00a0 According to official estimates, the Cuban economy shrank by two percent in 2023, while inflation reached 30 percent.
