{"id":254583,"date":"2024-02-13T10:46:14","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T02:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=254583"},"modified":"2024-02-13T10:46:15","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T02:46:15","slug":"laos-meeting-of-economic-ministers-in-march-will-discuss-review-of-asean-india-pact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=254583","title":{"rendered":"Laos meeting of economic ministers in March will discuss review of ASEAN-India pact"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEW DELHI, Feb 13 (NNN-Bernama) &#8212; The meeting of ASEAN economic ministers in Laos next month will discuss the review of a 15-year-old trade agreement with India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) seeks to make it more relevant to the business community and companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We will discuss it at the upcoming ASEAN Economic Ministers&#8217; Retreat Meeting,&#8221; ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn told Bernama on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASEAN and India last year agreed to complete the revision in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked if it would be finalised next year, Kao was non-committal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his talks with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Kao raised the issue of India becoming part of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the world&#8217;s largest free trade agreement, which entered into force in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We believe it (India joining) is in the interests of all of us,&#8221; he said, while delivering a lecture at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) think-tank on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RCEP brings together ASEAN and its key trading partners Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India pulled out of RCEP negotiations in November 2019, but there is a fast-track accession process in case India wants to join it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India is ASEAN&#8217;s eighth largest trading partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; NNN-BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI, Feb 13 (NNN-Bernama) &#8212; The meeting of ASEAN economic ministers in Laos next month will discuss the review of a 15-year-old trade agreement with India.
