{"id":254347,"date":"2024-02-11T11:57:13","date_gmt":"2024-02-11T03:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=254347"},"modified":"2024-02-11T11:57:13","modified_gmt":"2024-02-11T03:57:13","slug":"brazil-has-a-dengue-emergency-portending-a-health-crisis-for-the-americas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=254347","title":{"rendered":"Brazil has a dengue emergency, portending a health crisis for the Americas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2024\/02\/09\/multimedia\/Brazil-dengue-04-cgbh\/Brazil-dengue-04-cgbh-articleLarge.jpg?quality=75&amp;auto=webp&amp;disable=upscale\" alt=\"A mean wearing rubber gloves leans over to examine a plant in an area with numerous potted plant.\"\/><figcaption>A city worker drains standing water from potted plants in a street in Rio, in an effort to eliminate breeding spots for mosquitoes<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>BRASILIA, Feb 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Brazil is experiencing an enormous outbreak of dengue fever, the sometimes fatal mosquito-borne disease, and public health experts say it is a harbinger of a coming surge in cases in the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brazil\u2019s Health Ministry warns that it expects more than 4.2 million cases this year, outstripping the 4.1 million cases the Pan-American Health Organization recorded for all 42 countries in the region last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brazil was due for a bad dengue year \u2014 numbers of cases of the virus typically rise and fall on a roughly four-year cycle \u2014 but experts say a number of factors, including El Ni\u00f1o and climate change, have significantly amplified the problem this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe record heat in the country and the above-average rainfall since last year, even before the summer, have increased the number of mosquito breeding sites in Brazil, even in regions that had few cases of the disease,\u201d Brazil\u2019s health minister, N\u00edsia Trindade, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dengue case numbers have already soared in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay in the last few months, during the Southern Hemisphere summer, and the virus will move up through the continents with the seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we see waves in one country, we will generally see waves in other countries, that\u2019s how interconnected we are,\u201d said Dr. Albert Ko, an expert on dengue in Brazil and a professor of public health at Yale University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Health Organization&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2023-DON498\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has warned<\/a>&nbsp;that dengue is rapidly becoming an urgent global health problem, with a record number of cases last year and outbreaks in places, such as France, that have historically never reported the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States, Dr. Gabriela Paz-Bailey, chief of the dengue branch at the division of vector-borne diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that she expected high rates of dengue infection in Puerto Rico this year and that there would be more cases in the continental United States as well, especially in Florida, as well as in Texas, Arizona and Southern California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dengue is spread by Aedes aegypti<em>,&nbsp;<\/em>a species of mosquito that is becoming established in new regions, including warmer, wetter parts of the United States,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2024-02-dose-dengue-vaccine-vaccinated.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">where it had never been seen until the past few years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cases in the United States are still expected to be relatively few this year \u2014 in the hundreds, not millions \u2014 because of the prevalence of air-conditioning and window screens. But Dr. Paz-Bailey warned: \u201cWhen you\u2019re looking at trends in numbers of cases in the Americas, it\u2019s scary. It\u2019s been increasing consistently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florida reported its highest number of locally acquired cases last year, 168, and California reported its first such cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three-quarters of people who are infected with dengue don\u2019t have any symptoms at all, and among those who do, most cases will resemble only a mild flu.
