{"id":237343,"date":"2023-09-18T18:10:10","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T10:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=237343"},"modified":"2023-09-18T18:11:23","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T10:11:23","slug":"tanzania-two-killed-28-survive-in-underground-mining-land-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=237343","title":{"rendered":"Tanzania: Two killed, 28 rescued in underground mining land collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/dailynews.co.tz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/geita-1-780x470-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GEITA (Mbogwe, Tanzania), Sept 18 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) &#8212;\u00a0TWO people have died leaving 28 injured after an underground mining land collapsed in Mbogwe District, Geita Region last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That happened after about 30 people invaded the prohibited artisanal mining area of \u200b\u200b Kanegere village in Mbogwe District to carry out illegal mining activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geita Region Police Commander (RPC), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Safia Jongo reported the accident over the weekend, adding that the accident happened on Sept 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis mine location was closed for a while; people are prohibited from working at the mine but there are people commonly known as monkeys, who trespass through unofficial pathways to reach the prohibited areas,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She explained, as soon as the accident happened, people near the area rushed for rescue operation and managed to pull out one of the miners Justine Godwin (23), who was still alive who reported that there were many colleagues in the mining pit. However, Justine died later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRescue efforts were made, with 28 people saved and only one person remained and it was until the 13th (September) when the body of the man named Wilson Masunga (23), a resident of Bariad, was found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to appeal to small-scale miners, when the government or experts say that this area is dangerous and not suitable for mining, we should stop it as soon as possible,\u201d ACP Jongo warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She noted that there is a big problem of small-scale miners using unofficial pathways to reach the restricted mine areas and eventually leading to disasters of this sort. &#8212; NNN-DAILYNEWS<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEITA (Mbogwe, Tanzania), Sept 18 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) &#8212;\u00a0TWO people have died leaving 28 injured after an underground mining land collapsed in Mbogwe District, Geita Region last week.
