MOSCOW, Aug \u00a025 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his “condolences” over a plane crash that killed Wagner\u00a0chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, describing him as a man who made mistakes but\u00a0“achieved results”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0An investigation is underway into what caused Wednesday’s crash, which came\u00a0exactly two months after Wagner’s short-lived rebellion against Moscow’s\u00a0military leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“First of all I want to express words of sincere condolences to the\u00a0families of all the victims,” Putin said in a televised meeting, calling the\u00a0incident a “tragedy”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I knew Prigozhin for a very long time, since the early 90s. He was a man\u00a0of complicated fate, and he made serious mistakes in his life, but he achieved\u00a0the right results,” Putin added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He mentioned Prigozhin’s work in Africa — where Prigozhin claimed to be\u00a0earlier in the week and where the Wagner group maintains a significant military\u00a0presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As far as I know, he just returned from Africa yesterday and met with some\u00a0officials there,” Putin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the investigation into the crash “will take some time”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It will be conducted in full and brought to a conclusion. There is no doubt about that,” Putin said, in footage showing a meeting with the\u00a0Russian-installed head of the Donetsk region Denis Pushilin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0The circumstances of the crash, which claimed the lives of some of\u00a0Prigozhin’s close entourage, have prompted furious speculation about a possible\u00a0assassination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prigozhin was branded a “traitor” by Putin after Wagner launched its\u00a0rebellion in June, in what was seen as Putin’s biggest challenge to authority\u00a0since he came to power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those killed in the crash was Dmitry Utkin, a shadowy figure who\u00a0managed Wagner’s operations and allegedly served in Russian military\u00a0intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Putin said the Wagner members who died in the crash made a “significant\u00a0contribution” to Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine and shared a “common cause”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We remember that, we know that, and we will not forget that,” Putin said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia’s ministry for emergency situations on Wednesday announced the crash of a private plane travelling between Moscow and Saint Petersburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to preliminary information, all 10 people on board died, including three crew members, the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
