{"id":231506,"date":"2023-08-03T14:07:59","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T06:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=231506"},"modified":"2023-08-03T14:08:00","modified_gmt":"2023-08-03T06:08:00","slug":"mexico-oil-reaches-beaches-after-alleged-leak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=231506","title":{"rendered":"Mexico: Oil reaches beaches after alleged leak"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2023\/08\/03\/image-139816-1691042339.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>MEXICO CITY, Aug 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Volunteers have launched a beach clean-up in an area of Mexico where environmental authorities say oil is washing ashore after an alleged leak involving state energy giant Pemex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The oil &#8220;will of course have a serious environmental impact,&#8221; Alejandro Brown Gantus, deputy public prosecutor for environmental crimes in the southeastern state of Campeche, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There were more than 100 square kilometers of hydrocarbons in the sea and this was dispersed with the sea currents along all the beaches in the Gulf,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents and environmentalists have tried in recent days to clean a beach in the town of Lerma, where patches of black were visible in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 18, environmental groups reported an alleged oil spill in an area of the Gulf of Mexico where an explosion earlier in the month killed two workers at a gas production platform of state company Pemex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satellite images showed that the spill began on July 4, three days before the blast, and had spread over some 400 square kilometers, said the NGOs, which included Greenpeace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debt-laden Pemex, which has suffered a string of accidents in recent years, acknowledged that it had detected a leak in the Gulf of Mexico on July 3 that it said was repaired on July 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it insisted that there was no spill related to the explosion and suggested that pollution in the sea was the result of &#8220;natural hydrocarbon emissions.&#8221; &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MEXICO CITY, Aug 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Volunteers have launched a beach clean-up in an area of Mexico where environmental authorities say oil is washing ashore after an alleged leak involving state energy giant Pemex.
