{"id":223018,"date":"2023-05-31T11:30:43","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T03:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=223018"},"modified":"2023-05-31T11:51:58","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T03:51:58","slug":"australias-indigenous-voice-to-parliament-passes-lower-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=223018","title":{"rendered":"Australia&#8217;s Indigenous Voice To Parliament Passes Lower House"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>CANBERRA, May 31 (NNN-AAP) &#8211; The lower house of Australia&#8217;s Parliament, has passed legislation to establish a referendum on the Indigenous Voice proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House of Representatives this morning voted 121-25 in favour of the government&#8217;s Constitution Alteration Bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means, Australians are now one step closer to voting on whether to establish an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, in the country&#8217;s first referendum since 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill will now head to the Senate, before the government sets a date for the poll later in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If successful, the referendum would alter the constitution to recognise First Peoples of Australia, by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice and establish the Voice as a body that would advise the federal parliament on issues relating to Indigenous Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vote in Parliament coincided with more than 100 Australian migrant and cultural organisations joining forces to declare their support for the voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The community organisations released a joint resolution, asking for all Australians to work together, on ensuring a referendum on the proposal is successful.&#8211; NNN-AAP &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CANBERRA, May 31 (NNN-AAP) &#8211; The lower house of Australia&#8217;s Parliament, has passed legislation to establish a referendum on the Indigenous Voice proposal.
