{"id":206568,"date":"2023-01-12T19:04:37","date_gmt":"2023-01-12T11:04:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=206568"},"modified":"2023-01-12T19:04:38","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T11:04:38","slug":"malaysian-ringgit-rises-to-nine-month-high-at-4-35-level-as-optimism-increases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=206568","title":{"rendered":"Malaysian ringgit rises to nine-month high, at 4.35 level, as optimism increases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Nurul Jannah Kamaruddin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12\u00a0(NNN-Bernama)\u00a0&#8212; Growing optimism about slower interest rate hikes continued to heed\u00a0the Malaysian ringgit to end\u00a0at a nine-month high\u00a0on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 6 pm, the ringgit jumped to 4.3570\/3615 against the greenback,&nbsp;a level&nbsp;last seen in early May 2022,&nbsp; from Wednesday\u2019s close of 4.3700\/3725.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said confidence is increasing for&nbsp;the Federal Reserve (Fed) to downshift once again rate hikes from 50 basis points&nbsp;to 25 basis points at the February&nbsp;Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut, importantly, a more benign inflation outlook raises the odds of a Fed pause sooner than later and increases the likelihood of a soft landing, which is excellent news for stocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs such, investment&nbsp;inflows are expected to increase,\u201d&nbsp;he told Bernama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innes said exporters were&nbsp;also seen&nbsp;converting the US dollar&nbsp;on expectations of a stronger ringgit in conjunction with China\u2019s ongoing economic rebound post-COVID-19 lockdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis sets up a test of 4.25 mid-year or sooner, and the eventual return of ringgit to 4.20 by year-end,\u201d&nbsp;he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All eyes now are on the United States inflation data due later today after Fed chairman Jerome Powell failed to&nbsp;provide any new direct clues about their policy path during his speech at Sweden\u2019s Riksbank symposium Wednesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, China\u2019s inflation remained moderate with the consumer price index (CPI) rising by 1.8 per cent in December from a year earlier, up from 1.6 per cent growth in November, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said&nbsp;inflation in China stood at 2.0 per cent in 2022, below the official target of around 3.0 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At home, the ringgit traded mixed against a basket of major currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The local currency&nbsp;appreciated&nbsp;against&nbsp;the Singapore dollar to 3.2764\/2803 from 3.2820\/2841 at Wednesday\u2019s close and improved&nbsp;against the&nbsp;euro to&nbsp;4.6890\/6938&nbsp;from 4.6938\/6965.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It, however,&nbsp;eased&nbsp;versus the British pound to&nbsp;5.3033\/3088&nbsp;from 5.3017\/3047 at Wednesday\u2019s close and declined vis-a-vis the Japanese yen to 3.3242\/3281&nbsp;from 3.2984\/3007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; NNN-BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Nurul Jannah Kamaruddin KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12\u00a0(NNN-Bernama)\u00a0&#8212; Growing optimism about slower interest rate hikes continued to heed\u00a0the Malaysian ringgit to end\u00a0at a nine-month high\u00a0on Thursday.
