PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), Dec 22 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia welcomes the resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the situation in Myanmar, stressing the resolution is significant in supporting ASEAN\u2019s central role in finding a peaceful\u00a0solution for the junta-led country.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Malaysia’s Foreign ministry (Wisma Putra) in a statement on Wednesday said that Malaysia will work closely within ASEAN and its external partners to ensure progress in these efforts in the interests of the people of Myanmar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Malaysia had previously called on the UNSC to fulfil its charter-mandated responsibility. This Council (UNSC) also encourages the international community to support the ASEAN-led mechanism and process in this regard, including the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus,” the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UNSC adopted a resolution on December 21, 2022, denouncing the Myanmar military\u2019s rights violations since the February 1, 2021 coup, Human Rights Watch was reported as saying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The landmark resolution, passed with 12 yes votes and 3 abstentions, reflects the Myanmar junta\u2019s growing isolation generated by security force abuses amounting to crimes against humanity and war crimes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is the first Security Council resolution on Myanmar since the country, formerly known as Burma, acquired independence from Britain in 1948.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
