KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 (NNN- Bernama) — The Foreign Ministry is
called on United States to immediately remove Malaysia from the \u2018K\u2019 list and will summon the American envoy here for clarification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly protests the decision of the US government to subject Malaysia in the newly-introduced \u2018K\u2019 indicator,\u201d it said in a statement today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry noted that Malaysia\u2019s inclusion was announced in a travel advisory issued by the US State Department on April 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It said the move reflected the US government\u2019s concern about potential kidnapping or hostage-taking situations in certain areas of eastern Sabah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry said the new travel advisory lacked objectivity and did not reflect the reality on the ground, particularly the security situation in eastern Sabah which remained safe and protected for tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is borne by the fact that the number of tourist arrivals in Sabah has grown by 5.5 per cent, reaching 3.87 million last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFurther, the number of kidnapping incidents has dropped significantly to almost nil. Eastern Sabah continues to attract world-class divers,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This success, it said, was the result of proactive measures taken by the Malaysian government, such as increasing the number of patrols, closer security cooperation with neighbouring countries and the strategic positioning of security assets to secure the areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGiven these facts, Malaysia urges the US to be more objective in its assessment. We urge the US to immediately remove Malaysia from the \u2018K\u2019 list. The US ambassador to Malaysia will be summoned to provide clarification on the new travel advisory,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
