SHARM EL SHEIKH (Egypt), Nov 19 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Governments of Peru and Norway on Thursday signed an agreement to promote actions that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, the\u00a0Peruvian Ministry of Environment (Minam)\u00a0<\/a>has reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It specified that this agreement involves\u00a0Minam<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Norwegian Ministry of Climate-Environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within this framework, Norway will contribute US$10 million to reduce deforestation in Amazonian regions, as well as to support the implementation of the\u00a0National Registry of Mitigation Measures (Renami)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard,\u00a0Peruvian Environment Minister Wilbert Rozas<\/a>\u00a0highlighted the signing of this agreement that will make it possible to face climate change through forest conservation and achieve the well-being of indigenous or native peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The reduction of deforestation and the sustainable management of forests is essential for complying with our climate commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% in the year 2030; therefore, the sustainable and inclusive development of our Amazonia is necessary,” he remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norwegian Climate and Environment Minister Espen Barth<\/a>, Inter-Ethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (Aidesep) Chairman Jorge Perez, and Confederation of Amazonian Nationalities of Peru (Conap) Chairman Hosea Barbaran also participated in the signing ceremony.

On Nov 6, the COP27 began in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where more than 30,000 people \u2014including authorities, specialists, and environmental leaders\u2014 analyze and promote efforts to accelerate actions in the face of the climate emergency \u2014thru Nov 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peru participates in this world event with more than 170 representatives from the public and private sectors<\/a>, thus involving indigenous or native peoples, youth, civil society members, and academics, among others, the\u00a0Environment Ministry<\/a>\u00a0reported on the initial day of activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
