LONDON, April 11 (NNN-Anadolu) \u2013 Leaders of the European Union agreed late Wednesday to grant an extension to the U.K. on Brexit up to the end of October with a review in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
European Council President Donald Tusk said on Twitter that the EU\u2019s 27 member states and the UK reached the agreement at an emergency Brexit summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEU27 has agreed an extension of Art. 50. I will now meet PM Theresa May for the UK government’s agreement,\u201d Tusk tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEU27\/UK have agreed a flexible extension until 31 October. This means additional six months for the UK to find the best possible solution,\u201d he said in a later tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a press conference, Tusk said if the withdrawal agreement is ratified by the U.K., the extension period will be terminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said what happens during the extension is \u201cin the U.K.\u2019s hands\u201d, including changing the strategy or even revoking Article 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPlease do not waste this time,\u201d he urged the U.K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe U.K. will remain a friend of the EU,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tusk noted that the extension is shorter than he expected but long enough to allow the U.K. to find a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that although the U.K. will remain a member, sometimes the EU27 would meet as 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said there will probably be a European election in the U.K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
May was aiming to avoid the U.K.’s participation in the upcoming European Parliament elections with a shorter extension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She confirmed at a press conference following the agreement that she has agreed to the EU\u2019s terms for the extension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe U.K. will continue to hold full EU membership as well as its obligations during the extension,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
May said she wants the U.K. to leave the EU as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe EU has agreed that, if the withdrawal agreement is passed before the end of October, it will be able to leave,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo if it can be passed in the first three weeks of May, the UK will be able to leave on 1 June,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
May said what has been agreed tonight in Brussels would allow the U.K. to leave before the end of June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She added that the “choices we now face are stark and the timetable is clear”, urging British MPs to “press on at pace with our efforts to reach a consensus”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI do not pretend the next few weeks will be easy or that there is a simple way to break the deadlock in Parliament,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
May had asked last week for an extension up to June 30 in a letter to Tusk, seeking a further short extension to the departure date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.K. was set to leave the EU on March 29. But after failing three times to secure her deal in the House of Commons, May was given an extension by the EU until April 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a 2016 referendum, British voters decided to leave the bloc after a more than 40-year-long membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
