Photo courtesy of aps.dz<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">ALGERIS<\/g>, April 10 (NNN-AFRICANEWS) &#8211; Algeria\u2019s lawmakers on Tuesday appointed the upper house chairman Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president following the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika after weeks of mass protests against his rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protesters, who are demanding sweeping democratic reforms, are opposed to figures like Bensalah, a close associate of Bouteflika and his inner circle who dominated Algeria for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon stepping down last week, Bouteflika promised that elections would be held after 90 days as part of a transition he said would usher in a new era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe width=\"1\" height=\"2\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His appointment is in keeping with Algeria\u2019s constitution but protesters, who want sweeping democratic reforms, oppose figures like Bensalah, a close associate of Bouteflika and his inner circle who dominated Algeria for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after the announcement in parliament, hundreds of mostly students protested in central Algiers, some chanting \u201cBensalah go\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must work to allow the Algerian people elect their president as soon as possible,\u201d Bensalah told parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The big question is how Algeria\u2019s powerful military \u2013 long seen as a kingmaker in Algerian politics \u2014 will react to Bensalah\u2019s appointment and any opposition that arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gaid Salah carefully managed Bouteflika\u2019s exit, which came after six weeks of mostly peaceful demonstrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salah has expressed support for protesters, who want democratic reforms after almost 60 years of monolithic rule by veterans of the 1954-62 independence war against France.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALGERIS, April 10 (NNN-AFRICANEWS) &#8211; Algeria\u2019s lawmakers on Tuesday appointed the upper house chairman Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president following the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika after weeks of mass protests against his rule.
