PORT-AU-PRINCE, Sept 21 (NNN-CARIBBEANNEWSNOW) — An escalation in what the UN is calling \u201cviolent civil unrest\u201d in Haiti, and the subsequent blockading of roads across the country, is making it \u201cvery challenging for humanitarian partners to assist\u201d, according to the UN Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nationwide protests sparked initially by the almost doubling petrol prices have brought the Caribbean to what the UN has described as a \u201cstandstill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haiti is grappling with multiple economic, political, security and humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Jovenel Mo\u00efse was assassinated in July last year, and in August, an earthquake caused widespread death and destruction across southern regions of the Caribbean island nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heavily armed violent gangs have taken over large swathes of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and regularly kidnapped local people for ransom. According to news reports, gunfire has been heard across the city throughout the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a0a statement issued<\/a>\u00a0on behalf of the UN Secretary-General\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Guterres,\u00a0Dujarric said the UN chief was \u201cparticularly preoccupied\u00a0with\u00a0the safety of all Haitians including the most vulnerable and calls for calm and maximum restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe urges all relevant stakeholders to take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation, avoid violence, and allow the Haitian National Police to fulfil its role to protect the population.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN Chief also called on \u201call stakeholders to rise above their differences and to engage, without further delay, in a peaceful and inclusive dialogue on a constructive way forward\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He warned that \u201cthe already dire humanitarian situation faced by Haiti\u2019s most vulnerable people will deteriorate even further if the current circumstances continue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of the area around Gonaives was in floodwaters and covered by mud after Tropical Storm Jeanne tore through Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, a warehouse used by the UN World Food Programme (WFP<\/a>) in Gonaives in the north of the country was looted and then set on fire by rioters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The emergency food aid agency\u2019s country director, Jean-Martin Bauer, described the incident as \u201csimply unacceptable. The looted food was intended to feed nearly 100,000 school children until the end of the year and provide emergency assistance to Haiti\u2019s most vulnerable families\u201d, he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWFP is in Haiti to support vulnerable communities in urgent need while strengthening local production and livelihoods through our long-term resilience initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN said its staff and partners remain on the ground and are ready to assist people in need across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
