{"id":191639,"date":"2022-09-17T16:35:17","date_gmt":"2022-09-17T08:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=191639"},"modified":"2022-09-17T16:35:18","modified_gmt":"2022-09-17T08:35:18","slug":"cheetahs-reappear-in-indias-wild-after-seven-decades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=191639","title":{"rendered":"Cheetahs reappear in India&#8217;s wild after seven decades"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Shakir Husain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NEW DELHI, Sept 17 (NNN-Bernama) &#8212; Cheetahs will be roaming India&#8217;s forests again, decades after the species went extinct in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India on Saturday received eight cheetahs, five female and three male, from Namibia as part of a project to reintroduce these big cats in its wildlife sanctuaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first batch is being released into the Kuno National Park, a 750 square kilometre nature reserve in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radio collars will be put on the cheetahs for the remote monitoring of their movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cheetah was declared extinct from India in 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India plans to bring more cheetahs from South Africa, Namibia and other African countries over a period of five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The introduction of the cheetah is not only a species recovery program but an effort to restore ecosystems with a lost element that has played a significant role in their evolutionary history,&#8221; the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government will use the cheetah &#8220;as an umbrella species for conserving the biodiversity of grasslands, savanna and open forest systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; NNN-BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Shakir Husain NEW DELHI, Sept 17 (NNN-Bernama) &#8212; Cheetahs will be roaming India&#8217;s forests again, decades after the species went extinct in the country.
