\u00a0 KYIV, Aug \u00a026 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear\u00a0plant under occupation by Moscow’s troops was disconnected from the national\u00a0power supply on Thursday, the state energy operator said, as President Vladimir\u00a0
Putin signed a decree to swell the ranks of Russia’s military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0The Zaporizhzhia plant — Europe’s largest nuclear facility — has been\u00a0occupied by Russian troops in southern Ukraine since the opening weeks of the\u00a0war, and remained on the frontlines ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 Recently Moscow and Kyiv have traded blame for shelling around the complex,\u00a0a “highly volatile” development the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)\u00a0says “underlines the very real risk of a nuclear disaster”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 \u00a0The development came on a day when Russian President Vladimir Putin signed\u00a0a decree to increase the headcount of his country’s army to more than two\u00a0million, including 1.15 million servicemen, from next January, according to the\u00a0
document published on a government portal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 Putin last set the army headcount in 2017 at around 1.9 million people with\u00a01.01 million soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 \u00a0Ukraine state operator Energoatom said the Zaporizhzhia plant was severed\u00a0from the national network after a power line was twice disconnected by ash pit\u00a0fires in an adjacent thermal power plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 The three other power lines “were earlier damaged during terrorist attacks”\u00a0by Russian forces, the operator said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 “The actions of the invaders caused a complete disconnection of the\u00a0(Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant) from the power grid — the first in the\u00a0history of the plant,” Energoatom added on Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 \u00a0It added that “start-up operations are under way to connect one of the\u00a0reactors to the network”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 Kyiv officials have said they believe Moscow has seized the station in\u00a0order to divert power to the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 Energoatom could not be immediately reached for comment on whether the\u00a0supply had been diverted, the cause of the ash pit fires, or the number of\u00a0those without electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 However, the mayor of the city of Melitopol Ivan Fedorov said “Russian\u00a0occupiers cut off the electricity in almost all occupied settlements of\u00a0Zaporizhzhia”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 Earlier on Thursday Britain’s defence ministry said satellite imagery from\u00a0the weekend “indicated that Russia maintained an enhanced military presence at\u00a0the site”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0“The principal risks to reactor operations are likely to remain disruption\u00a0to the reactors’ cooling systems, damage to its back-up power supply, or errors\u00a0by workers operating under pressure,” the ministry added in a statement. \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0 Meanwhile in Kyiv the city council renamed 102 streets in part of an\u00a0ongoing effort to “de-Russify” public spaces.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
