KYIV, Aug 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A United Nations-chartered ship loaded with 23,000 metric tonnes of Ukrainian grain set sail from a Black Sea port, marking the first departure of a World Food Programme (WFP) initiative to assist countries facing famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lebanese-flagged Brave Commander on Sunday left the port of Pivdennyi, in the city of Yuzhne, according to regional Governor Maksym Marchenko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It plans to sail to Djibouti, where the grain will be unloaded and transferred to Ethiopia, one of five countries the UN considers at risk of starvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WFP Ukraine coordinator Denise Brown said the authorities were looking at using rail to augment the shipments of grain, and the Ukrainian agriculture ministry was also planning on opening a new truck route to Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov was in Yuzhne to oversee the ship\u2019s loading. \u201cI hope that other ships chartered by the World Food Programme will come to our ports. I hope there will soon be two, three more ships,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian authorities have not released details on when the Brave Commander will arrive in Djibouti, citing security concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cargo was funded with donations from WFP, the US Agency for International Development and several private donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine and Russia\u00a0reached a deal<\/a>\u00a0with Turkiye on July 22 to restart Black Sea grain deliveries, addressing the major export disruption that has occurred since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brave Commander, which docked<\/a> at the Pivdennyi port on Friday, is the first UN vessel carrying humanitarian food assistance to set sail since Kyiv and Moscow penned the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are definitely planning other ships to leave the ports of Ukraine, to help people around the world,\u201d Marianne Ward, WFP deputy country director in Ukraine, told journalists. \u201cThis should just be the first of many humanitarian ships to leave the ports.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0first commercial ship<\/a>\u00a0carrying grain, the Sierra Leone-flagged Razoni, left on Aug 1 and was approaching the Syrian port of Tartus on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, 16 vessels have departed from Ukraine since the July deal, according to Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WFP said a record 345 million people in 82 countries face acute food insecurity and up to 50 million people in 45 countries are on the brink of famine and risk being tipped over the edge without humanitarian support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena Faige Neroba, a business development manager at the brokerage company Maxigrain, said that Ukraine is \u201cready to supply more than 50 million metric tonnes of agricultural products\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe main challenge is [posed by] floating mines,\u201d she said. \u201cShip owners are waiting to see how the passage of other vessels goes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neroba added that departures from a significant exporter such as Ukraine will help reduce the price of food items globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food prices dropped 8.6 percent in July from the previous month, particularly because of lower wheat and vegetable oil prices, according to the UN index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
