KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia-Turkiye bilateral ties have been upgraded to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) effective from Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob\u2019s recent visit to Ankara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said moving forward, both countries have agreed to organise and conduct more discussions, both formally and informally, between the two countries\u2019 Foreign Ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPrime Minister has just concluded a very successful visit to Ankara where he and President Erdogan had very fruitful meetings over several issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLater on, a state visit by Malaysian King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri\u2019ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to Turkiye will be held in mid-August,\u201d he said in a joint press conference with Turkiye’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu at the Malaysian Parliament, Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ismail Sabri was on a four-day official visit to Turkiye last month where he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Presidential Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both leaders exchanged views on strengthening bilateral ties and current regional and international developments, particularly on food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saifuddin further elaborated both countries are currently in the final round of negotiations to conclude the expansion of the Malaysia-Turkiye Free Trade Agreement (MTFTA) which would cover new areas \u2013 namely investment, services and e-commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOn currency swap, we are working to expedite the signing of the MTFTA\u2019s expansion and also for both central banks to conclude the discussion on the currency swap within the parametres of the financial sphere,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saifuddin noted that both countries agreed that new potential areas of investment \u2013 particularly in the digital economy, military, and defence industry \u2013 can be further explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On continued investment through Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISGIA), certain issues on the further participation of MAHB at the international airport in Turkiye were also raised by the Malaysian side during the meeting today, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe also discuss (about) the ongoing discussions between the Turkish Petroleum and Turkish Petroleum Offshore Technology Centre with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is hopeful to see Turkiye oil and gas company in Malaysia very soon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the areas of humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan, Saifuddin said that the Malaysian non-governmental organisation Global Peace Mission (GPM) will start the discussion with Turkiye\u2019s Red Crescent on how both sides could play a role in rendering support to the people of the conflict-affected country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Cavusoglu said the reciprocal visit and discussions between Malaysia and Turkiye will give a new impetus to the shared bilateral relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is also thankful to the Malaysian government for its continuing support in enhancing Turkiye\u2019s institutional relations with the regional bloc of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cavusoglu further added that as Turkiye was targeting to achieve a US$5 billion bilateral trade volume this year, more cooperations need to be established and worked on between the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn the first half of this year, we\u2019ve already reached the trade volume of US$2.42 billion which shows a 50 per cent growth. The number is growing and there\u2019s an impact. We will do our best to achieve more this year,\u201d he said, noting Malaysia is Turkiye\u2019s biggest trading partner in the ASEAN region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
