{"id":182497,"date":"2022-07-06T15:05:26","date_gmt":"2022-07-06T07:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=182497"},"modified":"2022-07-06T15:05:27","modified_gmt":"2022-07-06T07:05:27","slug":"ethiopia-pm-meets-sudans-burhan-says-both-endorse-dialogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=182497","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopia PM meets Sudan&#8217;s Burhan, says both endorse &#8216;dialogue&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img src=\"https:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/Media\/News\/2022\/7\/5\/41_2022-637926271963022842-302.jpg\" alt=\"Burhan\"><br>Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (L) and Sudan leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan meet in Nairobi, Kenya<a href=\"https:\/\/www.addtoany.com\/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fenglish.ahram.org.eg%2FNews%2F471131.aspx&amp;title=Ethiopia%20PM%20meets%20Sudan%27s%20Burhan%2C%20says%20both%20endorse%20%27dialogue%27\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NAIROBI (Kenya), July 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; <strong>Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said he met Sudan&#8217;s coup leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Nairobi on Tuesday and that both committed to &#8220;dialogue&#8221; to resolve any differences.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their talks follow a clash in a volatile border region last month in which Khartoum said that Ethiopian forces had captured and killed Sudanese troops &#8212; claims denied by Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have both agreed that our two countries have plenty of collaborative elements to work on peacefully,&#8221; Abiy said in a Twitter post, accompanied by a picture of the two men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our common bonds surpass any divisions. We both made a commitment for dialogue &amp; peaceful resolution to outstanding issues,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both leaders were in the Kenyan capital for a summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) regional body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sudan&#8217;s ruling sovereign council said only that there had been a &#8220;closed-door meeting&#8221; between Burhan and Abiy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IGAD and the African Union had both voiced alarm last week over the escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Sudan following the incident in the disputed Al-Fashaqa border area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khartoum said the Ethiopian army had executed seven Sudanese soldiers and a civilian in a clash on June 22 in Al-Fashaqa, and announced it was recalling its ambassador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Addis Ababa claimed that Sudanese forces had crossed into Ethiopian territory and that the casualties resulted from a skirmish with a local militia, denying its soldiers were in the area at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al-Fashaqa is a fertile strip of land that has long been a source of friction between Addis Ababa and Khartoum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The region, which lies close to Ethiopia&#8217;s war-torn northern region of Tigray, has long been cultivated by Ethiopian farmers but is claimed by Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dispute has sparked sporadic clashes between the two sides, some fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rift also feeds into wider tensions over land and water between the neighbours, particularly stoked by Ethiopia&#8217;s mega-dam on the Blue Nile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sudan and Egypt, both downstream countries, have been opposed to the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and pushed for an agreement on the filling of its reservoir and the dam&#8217;s operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tensions were heightened further after fighting erupted in Tigray in November 2020, sending tens of thousands of refugees fleeing into Sudan.\u00a0&#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (L) and Sudan leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan meet in Nairobi, Kenya NAIROBI (Kenya), July 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said he met Sudan&#8217;s coup leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Nairobi on Tuesday and that both committed to &#8220;dialogue&#8221; to resolve any differences.
