\u00a0CANAZEI (Italy), July 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Rescuers warned that\u00a0hopes of finding survivors were diminishing after an avalanche set off by the\u00a0collapse of an Italian glacier during a heatwave killed at least six people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities said they did not know how many climbers were caught when the\u00a0glacier gave way on Sunday on Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Italian\u00a0Dolomites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ice and rock thundered down the slope at 300 kilometres an hour, according to the head of Trento province, Maurizio Fugatti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, rescuers armed with thermal drones searched for body heat from\u00a0potential survivors trapped in ice, although hope was rapidly dwindling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chances of finding survivors “are slim to nothing”, the region’s Alpine\u00a0Rescue Service head Giorgio Gajer told AGI news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The six bodies recovered so far were found “torn apart”, rescuer Gino Comelli\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disaster struck one day after a record-high temperature of 10 degrees\u00a0Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) was recorded at the summit of the glacier,\u00a0the largest in the Italian Alps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The glacier had been weakened by decades of global warming, experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alpine Rescue spokeswoman Michela Canova said an “avalanche of snow, ice\u00a0and rock” hit an access path at a time when there were several roped parties,\u00a0“some of whom were swept away”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spokesman for Trento province said people were still being reported\u00a0missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trento’s chief prosecutor Sandro Raimondi was quoted by Corriere della Sera\u00a0newspaper as saying he feared the number of dead “could double if not\u00a0triple”, based on the number of cars in the car park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Canova urged caution, saying the total number of climbers involved was\u00a0“not yet known”. Eight people were recovered with injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bodies dug out of the ice and rock were taken to the village of Canazei,\u00a0where Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi visited rescue workers on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Images of the avalanche filmed from a refuge close by show snow and rock\u00a0hurtling down the mountain slopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Francis tweeted his prayers for the victims, saying tragedies provoked\u00a0by climate change, such as this, “must push us to seek urgently new ways to\u00a0respect people and nature”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trento public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to\u00a0determine the causes of the tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
