{"id":181454,"date":"2022-06-27T14:52:01","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T06:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=181454"},"modified":"2022-06-27T14:52:01","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T06:52:01","slug":"grenada-elects-newcomer-in-politics-as-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=181454","title":{"rendered":"Grenada elects newcomer in politics as PM"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/thecaribbeannewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Dickon-Mitchell-1300x1301.jpg\" alt=\"prime minister, Dickon Mitchell, Grenada\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SAINT GEORGE&#8217;S, June 27 (NNN-CNN) &#8212; Another Mitchell has been elected as Grenada\u2019s new prime minister, and he\u2019s new to politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dickon Mitchell, who led the National Democratic Party Congress this year, won 52 percent of votes against the island\u2019s longtime prime minister, Keith Mitchell of the New National Party, with 48 percent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incoming party won nine of 15 constituencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A newcomer to politics, Dickon is a 44-year-old attorney and has taught in schools before leading his party in October last year. Some of his platforms include improving health care, decreasing unemployment and poverty, boosting education, and building affordable housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dickon is replacing Keith Mitchell, who has been serving Grenada\u2019s prime minister since 2015 until 2008, and then coming back to office in 2018 in a landslide victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outgoing prime minister is a 75-year-old statistician and a former professional cricketer who once served in the US government but returned to Grenada after the 1983 US invasion on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dickon announced that he would ask the governor-general to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/caribbean.loopnews.com\/content\/pm-elect-dickon-mitchell-transform-grenada-over-next-15-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declare the 24th of June as a national public holiday<\/a>&nbsp;or a bank holiday, so \u201ccitizens can celebrate the liberation day and the victory that they have created for Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, SAINT KITTS and NEVIS Prime Minister Dr\u00a0Timothy Harris\u00a0has announced eight candidates running for the general election from his People\u2019s Labour Party, but is yet to set a date for the election,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wicnews.com\/caribbean\/saint-kitts-nevis\/st-kitts-and-nevis-timothy-harris-plp-to-contest-all-eight-seats-in-st-kitts-452343056\/\" target=\"_blank\">WIC News has reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris has to decide on or before Aug 7, 2022, as per the constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The election was decided following Harris\u2019 move to dissolve the Parliament on May 10 after People\u2019s Action Party and Concerned Citizens Movement legislators filed a motion of no confidence in the prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, churches and NGOs asked Harris to let relevant authorities examine\u2014including a sensitive pre-election period\u2014electoral neutrality, the delay in announcing the election date, and misuse of office. &#8212; NNN-CNN<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SAINT GEORGE&#8217;S, June 27 (NNN-CNN) &#8212; Another Mitchell has been elected as Grenada\u2019s new prime minister, and he\u2019s new to politics.
