KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 (NNN-Bernama) — Media practitioners need\u00a0to adapt to changes led on by demands of internet revolution in the era of digitalisation, says a former\u00a0chief executive officer of a Malaysian news agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking as a panelist on Bernama TV: The Brief in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day, Yong Soo Heong said, digitalisation has also caused consumers to change their habits of getting the latest news, where newspapers are now printed in fewer pages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Besides that, we\u2019ve seen the flourishing of news websites while many people lost their jobs due to advertising revenue impacted by the emergence of digital giants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs such, media practitioners need to adapt to these changes and find ways to tackle the onslaught of digital siege,\u201d said the former chief executive officer of Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nonetheless Yong who was also former Bernama editor-in-chief said, it would take a while to determine the exact changes influenced by digitalisation in the media industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, he stressed, those involved in the local news media industry have to be very careful in what they report and strive to convey messages from any parties in the most accurate manner possible to ensure that media ranking is not negatively influenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt isn\u2019t only reporters and editors of any news organisation; it\u2019s also about how government agencies and other relevant organisations respond to various crises because feedback affects ranking as well,\u201d Yong added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also reminded media practitioners not be \u2018bodoh sombong\u201d<\/em>, as one is not an expert in any field or topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf we make mistakes, admit and move on. Most of the time, it\u2019s important to be humble and ask questions. don\u2019t claim we know everything because we\u2019re not experts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Asked if the scale of speech freedom is often viewed from the western media\u2019s perspective, Yong opined that there is no such a thing as absolute freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He further explained, in order to push the boundaries of media freedom, any media practitioner must be truthful in their reporting and create news in the best possible manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFreedom comes in when the society becomes more mature.
