{"id":173387,"date":"2022-04-25T10:14:11","date_gmt":"2022-04-25T02:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=173387"},"modified":"2022-04-25T10:14:11","modified_gmt":"2022-04-25T02:14:11","slug":"russia-ukraine-conflict-erdogan-zelensky-discuss-ukraine-crisis-over-phone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=173387","title":{"rendered":"Russia-Ukraine conflict: Erdogan, Zelensky discuss Ukraine crisis over phone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2022\/04\/24\/image-57699-1650821948.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ISTANBUL\/KIEV, April 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Sunday discussed the latest developments of the Ukraine crisis over the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a statement by the Turkish presidential office, Erdogan said that the evacuation of the wounded and civilians from Ukraine&#8217;s Mariupol, &#8220;where the situation is getting sad(der) each day,&#8221; must be urgently ensured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Zelensky tweeted that he stressed the need for the immediate evacuation of civilians from Mariupol, including Azovstal plant, and an immediate exchange of blocked troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two presidents also addressed issues related to the negotiation process between Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erdogan said that Turkey has a positive stance on the guarantor issue in principle, and that his country is ready to provide all possible assistance for the negotiation process, the Turkish presidential office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a fresh round of face-to-face talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul in March, Ukrainian negotiators named several countries, including Turkey, which could act as guarantors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0MEANWHILE, the United Nations Ukraine crisis coordinator, Amin Awad, called for an &#8220;immediate stop&#8221; to fighting in Mariupol to allow the evacuation of trapped civilians in the battered city &#8220;today&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The lives of tens of thousands, including women, children and older people, are at stake in Mariupol,&#8221; Awad said in a statement. &#8220;We need a pause in fighting right now to save lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The longer we wait the more lives will be at risk. They must be allowed to safely evacuate now, today. Tomorrow could be too late.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His call came after an attempted evacuation from Mariupol by Ukraine had failed Saturday, with Kyiv saying it was &#8220;thwarted&#8221; by Russian forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN statement said there was an estimated 100,000 civilians trapped in the city, which has been heavily destroyed after being besieged by Russian forces for weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awad said Orthodox Easter, which is celebrated in both Russia and Ukraine, provided an opportunity to halt hostilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;At a time of a rare calendar alignment of the religious holidays of Orthodox Easter, Passover and Ramadan, it is the time to focus on our common humanity, setting divisions aside,&#8221; Awad said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This month UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had urged a pause in fighting for Orthodox Easter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopes for an Easter ceasefire were dashed this weekend as fighting raged in eastern and southern Ukraine.<br>&nbsp;<br>Ukraine said Sunday that Russia was &#8220;continuously attacking&#8221; the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, where Ukrainian servicemen defending the city are holed up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nationalist Azov regiment, at the forefront of the battles with Russian forces, has said civilians are also trapped in the plant.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his forces not to assault the plant this week, but to keep it under siege instead. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISTANBUL\/KIEV, April 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Sunday discussed the latest developments of the Ukraine crisis over the phone.
