LIMA, March 30 (NNN-ANDINA) — Magistrate Zoraida Avalos<\/a>\u00a0on Friday was sworn in as the Attorney General of Peru for the next three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her speech \u2014after taking the oath of office\u2014 Avalos affirmed her administration will be neutral and impartial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m not moved by hatred and resentment. I do not have any commitments or conflicts with anyone. I’m just committed to\u00a0the pursuit of truth and justice<\/a>,” she expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avalos said her efforts will focus on ensuring\u00a0the Public Ministry’s\u00a0autonomy from political or subordinate interference. In Peru, the Attorney General is independent\u00a0from\u00a0the Executive Branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, she said a zero-tolerance policy against corruption will be adopted and reiterated her\u00a0support for emblematic investigations over the Lava Jato<\/a>,\u00a0Port’s White Collars<\/a>, and Orellana cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony took place at the Public Ministry’s headquarters in the presence of Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra, Congress Chairman Daniel Salaverry, and Judicial Branch Chairman Jose Luis Lecaros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also attending were Supreme Prosecutors Pablo Sanchez, Victor Rodriguez, and Tomas Galvez.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Attorney General Pedro Chavarry<\/a>\u00a0decided not to attend the\u00a0swearing-in\u00a0of his successor.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last January,\u00a0Avalos assumed the post of interim Attorney General to replace Pedro Chavarry<\/a>, who\u00a0stepped down from the job<\/a>\u00a0amid widespread unrest following his decision to remove the top prosecutors investigating the Lava Jato case, which was subsequently reversed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As interim Attorney General, Avalos decided to\u00a0declare the Public Ministry in a state of emergency\u00a0<\/a>in order to regain citizens’ trust in the institution.

Chavarry \u2014on New Year’s Eve\u2014 decided to remove Prosecutors Rafael Vela and Jose Domingo Perez from the Lava Jato case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0decision brought protestors to the streets<\/a>\u00a0in several cities across the Inca country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
