{"id":171633,"date":"2022-04-12T10:24:28","date_gmt":"2022-04-12T02:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=171633"},"modified":"2022-04-12T10:24:29","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T02:24:29","slug":"prominent-thai-politician-indicted-for-royal-insult-violating-cyber-law-over-vaccine-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=171633","title":{"rendered":"Prominent Thai politician indicted for royal insult, violating cyber law over vaccine speech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Linda Khoo Hui Li<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BANGKOK, April 12 (NNN-Bernama) &#8212; A prominent Thai politician faces up to 20 years in prison for insulting the king and violating Computer Crime Act during a livestream on Facebook in January, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 43-year-old Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, leader of the disbanded Future Forward Party (FFW) criticised the government\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine procurement plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was accused of lese-majeste which carries a maximum of 15 years in jail, and breached Computer Crime Act and shall be punished with imprisonment up to five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanathorn, now the chairman of the Progressive Movement, was granted bail at 90,000 baht with one surety on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, Thanathorn said his criticism was directed at the government and not the royal family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy criticism is for the benefit of the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a Facebook livestream, Thanathorn accused the government for mishandling its vaccine procurement and favoured a biopharmaceutical company owned by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanathorn who was the party chief of Future Forward was banned from politics for 10 years in 2020 over a loan he gave his former opposition party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; NNN-BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Linda Khoo Hui Li BANGKOK, April 12 (NNN-Bernama) &#8212; A prominent Thai politician faces up to 20 years in prison for insulting the king and violating Computer Crime Act during a livestream on Facebook in January, 2021.
