{"id":17098,"date":"2019-03-30T12:10:46","date_gmt":"2019-03-30T04:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=17098"},"modified":"2019-03-30T12:10:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T04:10:48","slug":"slovaks-vote-for-president-with-outsider-tipped-to-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=17098","title":{"rendered":"Slovaks vote for president with outsider tipped to win"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Slovaks-vote-for-president-with-outsider-tipped-to-win.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Slovaks-vote-for-president-with-outsider-tipped-to-win-696x392.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BRATISLAVA, March 30 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Slovaks vote for a new president on Saturday with the odds-on-favourite an outsider whose anti-corruption stance has resonated with voters, still reeling from the fallout from an<br>investigative journalist\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An environmental lawyer with no experience in political office, Zuzana<br>Caputova could become the EU and eurozone member\u2019s first female president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her rival in the run-off election is the ruling party\u2019s candidate, EU energy<br>commissioner and career diplomat Maros Sefcovic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two recent opinion polls give at least 60 percent of the vote to Caputova,<br>who ran on a slogan of \u201cStand up to evil\u201d, saying that \u201cPeople are<br>calling for change\u201d in the central European country of 5.4 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was among tens of thousands of anti-government protesters who rallied last year after journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee were gunned down as he was preparing to publish a story on alleged ties between Slovak politicians and the Italian mafia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then prime minister Robert Fico was forced to resign but remains the<br>leader of the populist-left Smer-SD party and is a close ally of the current<br>premier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five people have been charged in the Kuciak case, including a millionaire<br>businessman with alleged ties to Smer-SD who is suspected of having ordered  the murders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Parliament urged Slovakia on Thursday to continue to<br>investigate, \u201cincluding any possible political links to the crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MEPs voiced \u201cconcern about the allegations of corruption, conflicts of<br>interest, impunity and revolving doors in Slovakia\u2019s circles of power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Smer-SD has backed Sefcovic, support that appears not to have served<br>him well, as the 52-year-old took just 19 percent of the vote in the first<br>round of the election compared with Caputova\u2019s 40 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the office is largely ceremonial, the president ratifies<br>international treaties, appoints top judges and is commander-in-chief of the<br>armed forces. The head of state can also veto laws passed by parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polling stations open at 0600 GMT and close at 2100 GMT.
