{"id":17050,"date":"2019-03-30T10:29:17","date_gmt":"2019-03-30T02:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=17050"},"modified":"2019-03-30T10:29:19","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T02:29:19","slug":"us-new-york-state-prepares-to-ban-plastic-bags-second-after-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=17050","title":{"rendered":"US: New York state prepares to ban plastic bags, second after California"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\n171<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Part-GTY-1083156094-1-1-0.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Part-GTY-1083156094-1-1-0-696x463.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NEW YORK, March 30 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; After several failed attempts, New York state is poised to ban single-use plastic bags provided by stores, making it only the second US state, after California, to pass such a rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Democrats controlling both chambers of the state legislature, lawmakers have reached agreement to include the plastic ban in a broader framework of budgetary measures to be voted on by Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the bill passes, the ban on single-use plastic bags \u2014 which still allows for several exemptions \u2014 would take effect in March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor Andrew Cuomo tried unsuccessfully last year to prohibit the bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite plastic\u2019s notoriously harmful impact on the natural environment and on wildlife, few American states \u2014 with the exception of environmentally-minded bastions on the West Coast \u2014 have pursued legal restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Parliament approved a ban Wednesday on numerous plastic consumer products, including straws, cotton swabs and plastic wrapping. The measures are to take effect in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Yorkers use some 23 billion plastic sacks a year, Cuomo said last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In New York, a temple of consumerism with 8.5 million inhabitants, supermarkets generally provide free plastic bags, sometimes doubled for greater solidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, the city passed a law to impose a five-cent tax on each plastic bag, but it was overturned at the state level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the new legislation, New York counties would be able to levy a five-cent tax on paper bags, with part of the resulting revenue going to an environmental-protection fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California banned plastic bags in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are banned in much of Hawaii, since that state\u2019s most populous counties now prohibit their use. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>171 NEW YORK, March 30 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; After several failed attempts, New York state is poised to ban single-use plastic bags provided by stores, making it only the second US state, after California, to pass such a rule.
