\u00a0\u00a0 BUCHA (Ukraine), April 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Almost 300 people have been buried in a mass grave in Bucha, a commuter town outside Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, its mayor said Saturday after the Ukrainian army retook control of the key town from Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In Bucha, we have already buried 280 people in mass graves,” mayor Anatoly Fedoruk said by phone. He said the heavily destroyed town’s streets are littered with corpses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalists\u00a0reported earlier<\/a>\u00a0that they saw 20 bodies in civilian clothes laying on a single street in Bucha.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian forces have been trying to seize the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv since the invasion began on Feb 24, but Russian troops have been met with\u00a0fierce resistance<\/a>\u00a0across the country. The\u00a0death toll<\/a>\u00a0has been high on both sides, prompting the use of\u00a0\u00a0mass graves<\/a>\u00a0in other Ukrainian cities, such as\u00a0Mariupol.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia’s Defense Ministry\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0last week that it would reduce its military assaults on Kyiv, although the United States has\u00a0remained skeptical<\/a>\u00a0of those claims. Ukraine’s Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar\u00a0said on Saturday that the country had regained control of the “whole Kyiv region” .\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Saturday that retreating Russian troops were leaving mines around Ukrainian homes and “even the bodies of those killed,” creating a “catastrophic” situation for civilians.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
