{"id":166680,"date":"2022-03-04T09:57:31","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T01:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=166680"},"modified":"2022-03-04T09:57:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T01:57:31","slug":"algeria-journalists-jail-sentence-suspended-on-appeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=166680","title":{"rendered":"Algeria journalist&#8217;s jail sentence suspended on appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/assets\/news_photos\/2022\/03\/03\/image-48196-1646320441.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"286\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>ALGIERS, March 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Algerian journalist and press freedom activist Khaled Drareni had a two-year jail term reduced on appeal to a six-month suspended sentence on Thursday, a detainees&#8217; rights group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 41-year-old &#8212; who became a symbol of the country&#8217;s struggle for media freedom &#8212; used to work for French channel TV5 Monde and press freedom group Reporters without Borders (RSF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was sentenced in September 2020 for &#8220;inciting&#8221; demonstrations and &#8220;attacking national unity&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Committee for the Liberation of Detainees announced the reduction in his sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charges related to his coverage of demonstrations held by the Hirak opposition movement in 2020, a year after the mass protests toppled longtime president Abdelaziz Bouteflika.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> In February 2021, President Abdelmajid Tebboune pardoned Drareni after 11 months behind bars, but the following month the high court ruled his case could be re-examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prosecution had requested a heavier sentence against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday Drareni had tweeted: &#8220;Thank you everyone for your ongoing support.
