{"id":16071,"date":"2019-03-25T11:59:52","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T03:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=16071"},"modified":"2019-03-25T12:08:23","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T04:08:23","slug":"norway-rescuers-airlift-passengers-off-cruise-ship-in-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=16071","title":{"rendered":"Norway rescuers airlift passengers off cruise ship in storm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ship-392110_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16077\" srcset=\"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ship-392110_960_720.jpg 960w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ship-392110_960_720-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ship-392110_960_720-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ship-392110_960_720-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption>Pixal bay free images<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>OSLO, March 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) \u2013 Rescuers on Sunday airlifted<br>more than 1,300 passengers and crew off a cruise ship after it got into<br>difficulty in rough seas off the Norwegian coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Viking Sky lost power and started drifting mid-afternoon Saturday in<br>perilous waters two kilometres off More og Romsdal, prompting the captain to send out a distress call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that stage, the authorities decided to launch a helicopter airlift in<br>very difficult conditions rather than run the risk of leaving people on<br>board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would rather have the passengers on land rather than on board the<br>ship,\u201d police chief Tor Andre Franck said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By early Sunday, the crew had managed to restart three of its four<br>engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vessel was making slow headway at two to three knots off the<br>dangerous, rocky coast and a tug would help it towards the port of Molde,<br>about 500 kilometres northwest of Oslo, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Viking Sky sent out the distress signal due to \u201cengine problems in bad<br>weather\u201d, southern Norway\u2019s rescue centre said earlier on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ship was travelling south en route from Tromso to Stavanger when it<br>got into trouble in an area that has claimed many vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is dangerous to encounter engine problems in these waters, which hide<br>numerous reefs,\u201d said Tor Andre Franck, the head of the police operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A reception centre has been set up in a gym on shore to accommodate the<br>evacuees, many of whom are from the US and Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police said 17 people had been taken to hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area where the ship got into problems, known as Hustadvika, is<br>notoriously difficult to navigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shallow, 10 nautical mile section of coastline is known for its many<br>small islands and reefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Operated by the Norwegian firm Viking Ocean Cruisers, the Viking Sky is a<br>modern cruise ship launched in 2017 with a capacity of 930 passengers plus<br>crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to US and British nationals, there were also passengers from<br>14 other countries on board, Fjeld said. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OSLO, March 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) \u2013 Rescuers on Sunday airliftedmore than 1,300 passengers and crew off a cruise ship after it got intodifficulty in rough seas off the Norwegian coast.
