LIMA, March 23 (NNN-ANDINA) — Prime Minister Salvador del Solar has affirmed Justice Minister Vicente Zeballos’ presentation to Congress was impeccable, adding\u00a0Peru deserves to know the truth about the Odebrecht case<\/a>\u00a0in order\u00a0to defeat corruption<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Via Twitter, the official expressed his gratitude towards Zeballos for answering the 21 questions during an interpellation session regarding the Odebrecht agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, Zeballos affirmed the\u00a0collaboration agreement signed among Peru’s Public Ministry, Anticorruption Attorney’s Office and Odebrecht<\/a>\u00a0will enable the identification of the people responsible for corruption acts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he ruled out\u00a0Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra’s participation and decision-making capacity regarding said accord<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Peru, the Public Ministry is independent from the Executive Branch.

In mid-February,\u00a0Peru’s Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group\u00a0signed the long-awaited collaboration agreement with Odebrecht representatives<\/a>and former employees in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This deal is intended to procure evidence and testimonies\u00a0for the investigation of corruption cases in the Andean nation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid millions in bribes to government officials in Peru, in order to secure public-works contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result,\u00a0Odebrecht\u00a0<\/a>benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, four ex-Presidents have been linked to the Brazilian company such\u00a0as:\u00a0Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006)<\/a>,\u00a0Alan Garcia (2006-2011)<\/a>,\u00a0Ollanta Humala (2011-2016)<\/a>, and\u00a0Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former presidential\u00a0candidate Keiko Fujimori \u2014currently under preventive detention\u2014<\/a>\u00a0also allegedly received money from Odebrecht for her 2011 campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odebrecht will pay S\/610 million (around US$182 million) \u2014plus interests that may arise\u2014 in civil reparations to the Peruvian State<\/a>\u00a0over a period of 15 years as part of this agreement. — NNN-ANDINA
