{"id":156091,"date":"2021-12-17T10:50:16","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T02:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=156091"},"modified":"2021-12-17T10:50:16","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T02:50:16","slug":"ebola-outbreak-in-drcs-east-declared-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=156091","title":{"rendered":"Ebola outbreak in DRC\u2019s east declared over"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/367\/36734042.jpg\" width=\"\" height=\"\" alt=\"The DRC had announced its 13th outbreak of Ebola\"><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The DRC had announced its 13th outbreak of Ebola<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"article-123\">KINSHASA, Dec 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; An Ebola outbreak that emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) east more than two months ago, infecting 11 people and killing six, has been declared over.<br><br>The DRC had announced its 13th outbreak of Ebola on Oct 8 in Beni, in North Kivu province, prompting fears of a repeat of a 2018-2020 epidemic that killed nearly 2,300 people in the same region, the second-highest toll recorded in the disease\u2019s history.<br><br>\u201cMy warm congratulations to health workers in the health zone of Beni who have suspended their strike movement to cope with this epidemic,\u201d Health Minister Jean-Jacques Mbungani told an online news briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"article-123\">The Ebola virus, which causes severe vomiting and diarrhea and is spread through contact with body fluids, was first discovered near the Ebola River in 1976.<br><br>Health authorities vaccinated more than 1,800 people using Merck\u2019s recently licensed ERVEBO vaccine, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a statement.<br><br>\u201cStronger disease surveillance, community engagement, targeted vaccination and prompt response are making for more effective Ebola containment in the region,\u201d said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO\u2019s Africa director.<br><br>\u201cDuring this outbreak, the Democratic Republic of Congo was able to limit widespread infections and save lives.
