REDWOOD CITY (California), March 19 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peru’s Foreign Affairs Ministry on Monday confirmed that ex-President Alejandro Toledo was arrested in San Mateo County \u2014south of San Francisco\u2014 for being drunk at a local restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once informed of the arrest, the Peruvian Consulate in San Francisco contacted authorities at\u00a0Maguire Correctional Facility<\/a>\u00a0in Redwood City, where Toledo remained until he was released at 10:30 AM (local time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His release took place in conformity with U.S. legal requirements as such behavior did not constitute an offense that requires greater time in jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a release, the Ministry indicated Toledo’s arrest was not linked to the ongoing\u00a0extradition process<\/a>, which is being conducted with the utmost diligence\u00a0in coordination with several State-run institutions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his\u00a0part, the former Peruvian President denied he had been under arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m at home writing a book,” he told RPP radio and TV station.

As is known,\u00a0Alejandro Toledo is accused of allegedly having received millions in bribes from the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht<\/a>\u00a0to secure the Inter-Oceanic Highway contract, a major infrastructure venture connecting Peru and Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It must be noted this transaction was allegedly made when he was President of Peru (2001-2006).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Head of State is indicted on charges of collusion, money laundering, and influence peddling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
